Chapter 8

The summer rushed by too fast as far as Jonas was concerned. Working and taking care of Fleur kept Jonas busy. Arranging for her transportation to and from the dialysis center also took up his time. She was on the transplant list, but as of yet, no match had been found.

He closed the stall door after the last of the cows he'd brought in from the pastures. All the evening milking had been done, so the only thing left to do was clean up. His mind returned to his thoughts of Nikki as his body automatically worked through his usual routine.

Jonas didn't know what he would have done without Nikki. She'd been his rock during the hot, humid summer. When she'd first offered to help, Jonas had refused, not knowing how Ben Dugas would take their monopolizing Nikki's time all summer. But she would not take no for an answer. When Fleur had finally gotten out of the hospital and was feeling a little better, they'd had their delayed talk. It had been hard to explain his feelings to his mother; but he knew he had to come clean.

Fleur had been relaxing on the sofa with her feet up. It was a Sunday afternoon. Nikki was due at any time. Jonas decided it was best they talk before she got there. Jonas seated himself on the only chair in the room.

"Momma?"

Fleur had her back partially toward him and so she turned slightly to look in his direction. " Oui, mon cher? " 100

"I wanted to talk to you about the night you went to the hospital." Jonas felt uncomfortable discussing this subject with his mother.

"Yes?"

"First, let me tell you, I love Nikki. If I could have my way, I'd marry her." Jonas wasn't going to tell his mother he would never get his way.

Fleur looked surprised. "Really , cher? "

"Yes, Momma, and she loves me, too."

"I'm happy you could find someone to care about you, Jonas."

If he'd not promised Ben Dugas to keep his silence, Jonas knew he would tell his mother the whole truth. But he could only tell her enough to put her mind at ease. Jonas swallowed over the lump of anguish clogging his throat. He couldn't tell his mother Nikki would never be his wife, only his lover for the remainder of the summer. Every time they made love now it was bittersweet for Jonas, because he knew he'd have to give her up in the end.

"I just want to let you know not to worry if you see anything on me like a bite mark or scratch, okay?" That was as much as Jonas wanted to say to his mother about his sex life.

But Fleur had always been a blunt person.

"She do that to you, boy?" Fleur's tone was on the disapproving side.

"I asked her to do it, Momma." That was it. The cat was out of the bag.
